Dulwich Hill Hempcrete Home
SAY YES TO BUILDING SUSTAINABLY
With space aplenty, the homeowners of this project were looking for ways to better use the space, create a stronger connection to the back garden and improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency year-round. The new extension increases the home’s overall footprint by just three-square meters and yet greatly improves the functionality. The extension has an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area that opens directly to a covered deck with an outdoor kitchen. A laundry and bathroom are tucked away behind the main kitchen. The existing bathroom was redone and features a new insulated floor.
The light green and timber tones of the cabinets draw the colours of the garden inside, and the grey tiled splashback reflects the light. Large sliding glass doors open the room to the deck, garden and an outdoor kitchen with Betta Stone benchtops, boasting potential for family and friend entertainment. The skillion roof pitches upward to the north, enhances the space and light in the main living room. Solar panels have been mounted on the original roof, and the house is all electric except for a small glass bottle connected to the outdoor wok burner. Improving the house with an intelligent, well-designed, eco-efficient extension has changed this home for the better.
