Mallinger Constructions Project 1
AN ALLURING, SHOW-STOPPING DESIGN
The Middle Dural House is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, seamlessly blending contour-hugging architecture, refined design and a grand open-living plan. Nestled in a tranquil rural setting, this home offers its owners – a small family – an idyllic retreat from the bustling suburbs, complete with breathtaking views and boundless space.
Inspired by the homeowner’s European childhood, the design takes cues from contemporary barns while addressing the challenges of bushfire threats and harsh weather conditions. The planning began by carving functional pathways along the land’s natural contours, incorporating glass-lined internal walkways that enhance the home’s connection to its surroundings.
Thoughtfully designed wings define different zones – entertainment and living, a master wing, a children’s and guest wing, a cabana and pool house, and a machinery and workshop area. These distinct spaces are beautifully linked by courtyards, fire pits, a striking 14-metre black pool, a championship tennis court, lush gardens and immersive landscaping.
Beyond its architectural elegance, the Middle Dural House is a showcase of sustainability, designed to honour and preserve the environment it inhabits. At its core is an ecologically sustainable Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) structure, with Venetian Ash portals complementing an interior palette of recycled Tasmanian Oak, Venetian plastered masonry and silver travertine. Recycled ironbark shou sugi ban charred timber and black-metal porcelain joinery serve as striking functional accents, seamlessly tying into the home’s black metal and glass exterior.
The home retains key natural site features, excavating only where necessary to create subtle platforms. Passive solar heating and cooling, double glazing and cross-ventilation enhance energy efficiency. The home’s structural system is entirely sustainable CLT, with all external and internal finishes sourced from Australian recycled hardwood. Additionally, it treats its own sewage, generates power through a 10.5kW solar system and collects more than 100,000 litres of water in tanks.
