PRESERVING HERITAGE

Behind the character-filled, timeless façade of a heritage property, many homeowners live with problems they simply accept as a part of owning an older home: cold draughts in winter, scorching rooms in summer, windows that rattle in the wind, constant maintenance. For many, it feels like an impossible choice, preserve the charm that made you fall in love with the home, or enjoy the comfort and performance of a modern build.

The reality is: you shouldn’t have to choose.
Working within the requirements of the property, a 110-year-old home was revived. The original aged windows and doors were thoughtfully replaced with a curated selection of new fittings. These upgrades include elegant French doors with fixed glazing that maximise on natural light, high-performance German-engineered uPVC systems, contemporary tilt and turn windows, practical sliding windows for entertainment areas and awning windows replaced the outdated double-hung units, improving functionality without compromising the home’s appearance Each change was carefully selected to complement the home’s traditional architecture rather than compete with it.

Unlike conventional timber windows, these systems won’t rot, warp or peel, and require very little maintenance. Designed for Australian conditions, performance continues for decades, offering homeowners confidence that their investment will enhance both comfort and the home’s value for many years to come. Perhaps the most important lesson from projects like this is that improving an older home doesn’t always mean replacing it. Australia has thousands of beautiful heritage homes that deserve to be preserved. By upgrading the elements that no longer serve today’s lifestyle– particularly windows and doors – homeowners can dramatically improve energy efficiency, security and everyday comfort while protecting the architectural character that makes these homes so special.

This project, completed by APS Double Glazing using Kömmerling window and door systems, is a reminder that preserving history doesn’t mean living with yesterday’s performance.
Sometimes, giving a heritage home a new life simply means improving what needs improving, while respecting everything that makes it worth preserving.
