Glass with Gravitas
WonderGlass presents Melt, a new collection of gravity-formed furniture and tabletop objects designed by Nendo. Melt’s designer, Oki Sato, was inspired by watching the craftspeople in the WonderGlass workshops as they handled molten glass. His intention was to allow the material to direct the design process. This resulted in a unique method of laying hot glass sheets over an apparatus of suspended steel pipes and bars. The ingenious technique allowed the natural drape of the material to reveal its form. By combining this approach with pliable moulds the cooling glass could be removed and further sculpted by hand. The concept posed a challenge to the craftspeople, who had to determine the exact timing and temperature to create the desired outcome, but the results are clearly worthwhile. The finished pieces reflect the process used to make them, with evidence of gravity’s pull on the flowing, molten glass found in its final shape.
Melt is a true demonstration of “doing less and achieving more”, Sato says. The collection focuses on form, simplicity, and the intriguing power of gravity and heat, and includes fascinating chairs, tables, vases and coffee tables that each showcase the unique physical and conceptual principles behind the design.
