Attard’s Kitchen & Cabinetry Project 5
The incorporation of custom-designed cabinetry ensures the space caters to all members of the family, with storage options available in each zone of the kitchen. These elements were crucial to optimising valuable bench space throughout the entire area.
In-built shelving was also carefully fitted throughout the kitchen, providing multiple areas to store items in artful arrangements, without causing clutter. The placement of embedded shelving within the kitchen island is a particular highlight. It makes the most of a space that would otherwise be wasted, while also providing an ideal location to display cookbooks and keep them within easy reach.
Not only is the interior itself open and inviting, but the considered storage options ensure there is a place and a space for everything and everyone. For the owners, who were seeking a design that would bring together family and friends at all stages of life, and for all social purposes, the flexibility of the space was crucial, and the inclusion of bar seating enhances this quality effectively. Placed around two sides of the central island, the seating arrangement is ideal for a range of daily activities, from relaxed dining and entertaining, to completing homework.
The coffee nook is a lovely addition that creates interest within the space without overcrowding the main countertops. The peripheral placement of the nook also ensures a quick coffee fix is always available without impeding other kitchen activities.
Creating a harmonious kitchen is about more than functionality, and the aesthetic appeal of this space was a primary consideration when planning the design. The inclusion of contrasting wooden finishes ensured a dynamic look was achieved.
The focus on a largely monochromatic colour palette – featuring patterned grey and white feature tiles, and white below-bench cabinetry – allowed for the inclusion of bold additions such as a the pendant lighting and overhead feature cabinets, which are both painted in Dulux ‘Karma Half’.
The selection of similar carbon-neutral timber finishes for the island, cabinetry and flooring is not only visually striking, but also improves the environmental friendliness of the space. Likewise, the space was fitted with LED lighting for its energy efficiency.
