Gremmo Homes Project 1
The home’s symmetry is accentuated by the impressive curved glass panels that frame the pool and spa. Natural light and ventilation penetrate deep into the home through double-height open spaces and operable windows, which promote air flow and connectivity. The internal materials and finishes were sourced with great consideration given to quality. Polished porcelain, glass mosaics and metallic textiles were selected for their illuminative and reflective qualities, while natural-stone walling and timber-veneer doors balance the spacious rooms. A number of environmental elements enhance the sustainability of the home. A 3kW photovoltaic system was installed to assist in energy conservation. Skylights were installed in the alfresco and kitchen areas to improve the quality of natural light. A comprehensive C-Bus lighting system manages the use of power, while a 10,000L underground water tank is reticulated to all external taps, toilets and garden irrigation. Solar passive design and the home’s rearnortherly orientation also assist in limiting environmental impact.
Part of the design brief was to reduce the impact the façade had on the streetscape. This was achieved by creating nine separate floor levels, which complement the natural slope of the site. This presented a number of construction challenges relating to set-out, waterproofing and finishes. Another challenge was the construction of the curved pool, in which symmetry had to be considered. The on-site team paid great attention to detail in these areas and achieved a fantastic result. The landscaping incorporates a number of advanced plants and trees. This helped balance the more linear elements of the home, while enhancing some of the architectural renderings, such as the stone and timber cladding. The landscaping design brief requested a diverse range of plant and tree species, which enrich the colour palette of the home.
The construction process of the home, pool and landscaping was carefully managed with a high level of attention to quality and detail to achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing result. In a testament to the home’s superior design, it won the Custom Built Homes $500,000–$1,000,000 category at 2013 Master Builders Association (MBA) National Excellence Awards.
